Peacocks

To wrap up our duck incubation, we ended with a 75% hatch rate. Four eggs didn't hatch- three didn't develop at all (might not have been fertilized, although one of them was the egg that went in straight from the fridge) and one was a quitter (developed partway and died for some reason). So, 12 ducks are living in a tub in our garage until they're big enough to go outside.

I had just cleaned out the incubator when my dad asked if we had space to incubate some peacock eggs. He had found a clutch of eggs on one of his semis and a second clutch of eggs on a feed grinder. No chance the hen would be able to incubate them to hatching!

We set them on Sunday night. It's a wee bit snug, but they all fit.

The amount of eggs must impact the humidity; I had to open the ventilation hole all the way to get the humidity in the correct range. For the ducks, it was only open halfway.

Peacock eggs are too big for the automatic egg turner to work, so we'll need to turn them twice a day. I marked both sides of each egg with an x and an o to make rotating them easier. Peacocks also have a 28-day incubation. Stay tuned for more updates!
