A Tale of Two Brownies

Now that the muffin quest is over, time to focus on one of my other recipe quests. 🤪 Boxed brownies from scratch ...

One of the cookbooks I checked out from the library had two brownie recipes that caught my eye: a box mix brownie recipe from scratch and a better-than-supernatural brownie recipe. The other perk- this cookbook is all about weeknight baking, so the recipes are quick to make.

I wanted another option of things to serve for snack after church, so it was the perfect time to try both recipes!

The pan on the left is the top recipe and the pan on the right is the second recipe.

The box mix recipe drew my eye right away since that is the purpose of my quest. The downside to the recipe is that it only makes an 8*8 pan. But it is very easy and quick.

The supernatural brownies took longer to put together since the chocolate needs to melt and I don't have a microwave... Double boiler on the stove doesn't take that much longer, but it results in more pans in and out.

Overall taste wise, they were both great straight out of the oven (then again, what baked good isn't???). The box mix recipe was verrrry chewy and seemed underdone. I actually liked the supernatural brownies better, although the texture was a bit cake like. But when we served them Sunday, my preference might have swapped. The supernatural brownies had a mild caramel flavor and more of a crust on top. The box mix copycat had solidified more and was a nice gooey texture. Again, with a slight crust on top (I'm not a fan of top crust in my brownies, I guess 😅).

Because they're so different, it's hard to pick a favorite! I would make both again depending on the situation. But I will continue my quest for best brownie recipe...
