My stomach feels better today. I still feel a little off, but mostly better. We didn't have school again today, which gave me plenty of relaxation time. I corrected my papers, did a little cooking, watched some tv, caught up on paperwork, ordered more books for our class library, finished an audiobook and started another...
The day was sunny and clear for the most part. We didn't get as much snow as they'd predicted (as far as I could tell) and the weather seemed good. That is, until the evening commute. A close college friend of mine was supposed to have a birthday party tonight in Mankato, but now it sounds like roads are getting slippery (drifting snow maybe?). So I am sadly staying put. Tomorrow sounds better, so she and I will get together then. Hopefully some of the people in town will be able to make it so it's not too disappointing of a party.
Ugh. Weather. When does spring come again?

Blech
No kids were out sick today, but the one who wasn't feeling well last week still looked and sounded pretty tough today. Hopefully no more get sick! Me on the other hand... my stomach has been hurting on and off all day. I don't feel like throwing up; it just hurts and zaps all my energy. Blech.
On the plus side, it sounds like the storm we were supposed to get isn't supposed to be too bad. We're scheduled to go to a play at Nicollet tomorrow afternoon, so if we do have school it won't be too strenuous. I reminded my kids to bring stuff home to work on, just in case.
Today we caught up on our handwriting, memory, and spelling from last week. Most kids handed everything in! My three pokey little puppies are poking even further behind. But basketball is almost over, so maybe they can get caught up soon?
The tournament went well this past weekend. Girls got 3rd, boys got 2nd. My classroom was in order when I walked in this morning. Not too much for me to put back; it was nice.
Well, I'm going to keep this short and go home to try to recuperate before tomorrow.

No School Again
School got called off Thursday because of the blizzard. We knew the night before, which was nice.
It took me longer than I thought to leave school Wednesday night (because of the student staying to do late work), so my errands took longer, and I ended up texting our bible study leader saying I'd be late. By the time I left New Ulm, it was rain-snowing and my windshield frosted over driving home. Thankfully my max defrost cleared it enough for me to see the road and I made it home okay. While I got gas, I called our leader to see if any other ladies had come to study. They hadn't, and the two of us decided I should just go home, no bible study.
Today, Friday, we had a two hour late start, which turned into a no school day as well. It's our home basketball tournament this weekend and we were supposed to dismiss at 11:30am today. With a two hour delay that makes only one hour of school... not worth it. Mr. E told people to come at 1pm to set up the rooms for the tournament. So I got here at one and my room was all ready to go! People are bustling around prepping stuff and cleaning. I did a little more putting away, but it looks pretty good in here.
The big question is do we hide Joe for the weekend? In the past I've either taken him home or we've stuck him in his travel tank and tucked him under my desk. But the kids all know he's there. Maybe I should make a sign "Do Not Touch". Or... if I could find a padlock, I could lock his tank shut. That might be a better idea.

Class Color Day
I wore normal teacher clothes today, although I matched my class colors: gray and blue. My two sick kids are still home sick. I have a feeling I'll be another one down tomorrow; one of the 5th graders didn't look so hot today and he complained of a sore throat and cough. Although, with the weather they're talking, we might end up getting out of school early... more snow and blustery winds. Sigh. I'm ready for spring.
We were supposed to have our Chemistry of Baking day tomorrow afternoon, but our guest called me after school and asked to reschedule, she's sick too. No problem! Better to cancel now than to scurry around tomorrow trying to figure things out.
I had a student who was supposed to stay after school and work on her redos/late work, but her mom messaged me saying she was having car trouble and I should send her on the bus. So. No progress made with her unless she gets a lot done at home. However, I had a different student skip basketball practice to try to catch up on his work. He got one memory work said in two hours and a start on this week's memory. Sigh.

Blast from the Past
This week is our home basketball tournament, and with it comes the annual tournament dress up days. Yesterday was PJ Day (I forgot to dress up, oh well). Today was "Blast from the Past" Day. I dressed up as myself from about 15 years ago... I wore a St. Paul's Lutheran tshirt, put my hair in a ponytail, and dug out my favorite pair of jeans from high school. I remember sewing a heart patch over the first rip in the knees. Then the other knee ripped out and I used green thread to stitch it back together. Eventually I couldn't keep up with the rips and I stopped trying. Yes, I still have them, even though they're holey and falling apart. They were my favorite! I couldn't throw them away! And besides, the holes look so trendy!
Tomorrow is Class Color Day. 5/6 is gray and blue. I've got a ton of those colors in my closet, so I don't have to think too hard about that. Catch-up
School ended up being half two hours late. That means one bus came at the normal time (because the affiliated public school was on time) and the other bus came two hours later than usual. Thankfully, New Ulm was the one on time, so I could delay my arrival at school by a half an hour. It was not great roads, but I made it all right.
That didn't give us much time to accomplish all the things I wanted to today... Only four of my 12 were here at 8:30. I wouldn't let them take the morning off like they wanted to. They had to work on homework or read (not play in the gym... I caught a few of them sneaking off to shoot a few baskets). Then a truck came with the new desks for 1-4th grades. Since there were only a few 7-8th graders at school, Mr. E enlisted my students' help. Whew! It got them out of my hair and not complaining for a while. And they had fun messing with the boxes and delivering the desks. So I ended up with a productive morning, teacher-wise.
After the rest of the students trickled in (some on the bus, some dropped off), we did devotions and whole group reading. We didn't get to do our spelling groups because this week we have Junior Achievement. A retired man from church does ours. Today's lesson was all about making withdrawals from a bank account. They learned vocab words and played a giant board game. I think they might be working on that tomorrow too since it didn't seem like they finished in the time allotted.
Our afternoon was fairly normal, although I did make a plug for I Love to Read Month and the Edible Book Festival we're hosting at the end of the month. Then we started a new science book... physics. Most of them weren't sure what physics was, but after discussing further, we realized that there's a lot of questions they have about the way the world works that fall into the physics category. So they should be a good audience!

Short Week
So, today was the only day we had school this week... crazy, I know. This has been the coldest week I can remember! I got out and about a little bit on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, but stayed home Wednesday for the most frigid of the days.
I read a few books, cleaned out some cupboards, did some dishes, took my Christmas decorations down, cleaned a few things, baked a little bit, read some more books... I also got started curriculum mapping Writers Workshop/English, which is something that's been on my to-do list for literally three years or so. A very productive break! I was ready to get back to school though.
We had to reschedule a bunch of things since we missed so much school. Most have been fairly easy to move around, though we can't move our singing date. We're supposed to play bells and sing on Sunday, but bells missed out on two days of practice... We tried our songs today to see how they would go, and I think we'll be okay. It'd be better if we had two more practices in, but we'll just pray that what they practiced today sank in! The other frustrating thing is that I still have a lot of kids who haven't handed things in from LAST quarter. Ugh. It's going to be a headache staying on top of them to get their late work done.
On a positive note, a bunch of the graphic novels I ordered have arrived! I book talked them to my kiddos and most of them were snatched up as fast as a cookie. Although our morning was short, we got a lot of reading done.
It's I Love to Read Month and we began our day with all-school reading in the gym for about 20min. I even got to read! It was so quiet and peaceful... And when it was time to leave, each teacher got up silently, signaled to his/her students, and they walked out the doors. All in total silence. It was awesome. We didn't even plan it that way.
