Dangerous words for 5th and 6th grade. But they did very well with our balloon activity! They were under strict orders to NOT shoot them at people. If they did, we'd be finished immediately, no ifs ands or buts. It took a while to figure out the best way to shoot them. I'd found a picture on pinterest that showed a good way using only one hand, but it requires strong pinkies and index fingers. Still, they got pretty good. We set up a few pyramids of Styrofoam cups and paper tubes. I allowed them to aim for the balloons hanging from the ceiling (figuring they'd miss at least a few times, and that rubber bands probably wouldn't pop the balloons). Then I challenged them to shoot the rubber band through the church year chain links. "Can we get a marble in the jar if we make it?" Why not? They spent the rest of the time waiting in line to get the band through the chains. Two boys were really good at it! All total, we went from 48 marbles to 66!
Afterwards, my class served leftover root beer floats to the rest of the school. The musical went very well! They all did a great job! And our class fundraiser made over $300! The bake sale sold out (we only made about $24... there wasn't that much). The book sale was hopping too. There were only a few snafus in the show. The side mirror on the Jungle Tram fell down twice... shoulda used more duct tape. And at the way end, the monkeys' microphone cord got hooked and popped out, so their mic didn't work. They borrowed one from the kids on the Jungle Tram, but then they didn't have one to say their part, so one of the individually mic'ed people shared with them and it turned out fine. The star of the show turned out to be Daniel and the lions! One song the kindergarten lions prowl around a 5th grade Daniel, baring their teeth and claws, until an angel of the Lord appears and shuts their mouths. After that, they love Daniel and purr all over him! They get pretty cuddly, which is of course hilarious.
Two other interesting things today... one of the boys invented a crayon sharpener from an old stamp by using his scissors to cut a hole in it. And we lost Joe for about 10 minutes. We'd taken him out to clean out his tank and he wandered away when we weren't looking. We scoured the classroom, the coatroom, the gym and still didn't find him. It was a full-fledged tortoise hunt! And a good connection to the Bible story of the woman who lost her coin... she didn't stop until it was found. And we didn't stop until Joe was found. He turned out to be tucked behind some things in the closet.
Balloon activity Monday: write with marker/pen all day.
