Did you know that pencil erasers are made out of vinyl? Or synthetic rubber. A lot have volcanic ash to made them grittier. One of my kids asked what erasers are made of, which led us on a lovely hunt for information... which resulted in many more fun facts than we anticipated. Pencils on the tips of pencils is a mostly American thing; pencils in Europe don't come with an eraser attached! They have separate ones! We also found that there is such a thing as an electric eraser. It looks like a giant pen, but instead of ink at the tip, there is a circular eraser! You press a button and it wiggles the eraser in a circular motion. $10 on Amazon.com. Who knew?!
Today's balloon activity was pronounced "the best day ever." We spent most of the morning doing Daily 5 outside. They all wanted an extra chapter of read-aloud, so we were going to do that outside, but the boys spread out too far (and it was really windy), so we didn't. It turned out pretty well! Except I forgot to put on sunscreen. It wasn't too bright (and most brought sunglasses), we sat with our backs to the wind, and I still got to meet with my scheduled readers. A successful day all around! A few people forgot things like pencils inside and had to run in to grab them. A few also forgot to bring things inside and had to rush back out to hunt for them. Things scattered everywhere! One boy almost lost a few pages of his spelling to the wind! Thankfully, he's fast and caught them all!
Tomorrow's activity: listen to music during Daily 5. (The boys all thought this one was lame... I told them we didn't have to do it if they thought it was dumb. They didn't respond.) The girls all want to do it!
